Catching Permitting Problems Before They're Scheduled

A permit that's expired, a certification that lapsed, a work order missing an approval: none of these are surprises when you look closely enough. The problem is that "closely enough" usually means opening an individual record, and nobody opens every record before every day's schedule goes out.

Shoreline's permit management capability already covers the full lifecycle: acquiring permits, tracking their status and validity, assigning them to the right work, and monitoring compliance as work progresses. It's built to answer whether a piece of work is actually authorized to happen, not just whether it's on the calendar.

The newest addition surfaces that answer where planning decisions actually get made. A warning icon and tooltip now appear directly on the Planning Board for any work order or activity with an active issue, whether that's a permit lacking approval, a permit outside its valid dates, or personnel missing a required skill or certification. The same warning shows up as an info pill on the work order and permit detail views, and as a dedicated column on the work order list, so it's visible whether you're planning at the board level or reviewing a single record.

This matters because the cost of an unresolved permit issue almost never shows up at the moment it's created. It shows up days or weeks later, when a crew is mobilized against work that shouldn't have been scheduled yet. Surfacing the warning at the point of planning, rather than at the point of execution, is the difference between catching a problem and discovering one.

This fits a pattern we keep building toward at Shoreline: simulate and plan for the things that go wrong before they do, rather than reacting once they have.
